I remember when the Genesis of Shannara series was announced and how excited I was to learn that the Word and Void series and Shannara were actually in the same universe. It is a major seaport situated on a narrow isthmus between Puget Sound (an arm of the Pacific Ocean) and Lake Washington, about 114 miles (183 km) south of the Canada United States border, and it is named after Chief Sealth 'Seattle', of the Duwamish and Suquamish native tribes. But it’s so far in the future that there’s almost nothing left. There are mentions of the ‘Old World’ and a few visits to out of the way locations that make you wonder if this might be our world. For example, the trilogy reveals that before the Great Wars, some portion of the Four Lands was actually the Pacific Northwest.
While the Shannara books have always technically been in a post apocalyptic world, it takes Brooks many books to really start digging into that history. It is not until the publication of the Genesis of Shannara trilogy that Brooks describes the events of the Great Wars in detail and confirms that the Shannara series takes place on a post-apocalyptic Earth.
